UPDATE: July 24, 2012: $5000 in Funds raised during the Freedom Roast Day and Valor Ride are going to the purchase of a Wheelchair Accesible Van, Car Insurance and Gasoline for Derek and his Fiancee'. So Thanks Clifton PBA #36 Team, esp. Wayne S and John K and PBA Pres. Steve.
NOTE: It was an UNBELIEVABLE day! The weather was perfect, the coordination of the Valor Ride was totally amazing (about 1,000 motorcycles showed up and the procession was up to 5 miles long!!!) and the afternoon was fantastic! We had one of our Wounded Heroes with us (SPC Derek McConnell) and his family and some of the SECFOR Soldiers were there to be welcomed back - it was truly a day not to miss! Special thanks to Wayne, John and team (including Ken and Kim) for the incredible hard work - not to mention Jimmy and the amazing chef of the roast pork! This was one for the books! Also, we met an incredible guy named David who loves our Warriors and bought the Scott LoBaido painting and gave it to Derek. Thanks David and thanks Scott for being there too! Will post pix when have time - schedule too crazy right now!
This fund raiser is called The 1st Annual Freedom Roast. It is being completely coordinated by the Clifton (NJ) PBA #36 - a great organization! This event is an escorted motorcycle ride from Clifton to Ground Zero. On the return from Ground Zero we are passing several fallen Hero’s gravesites in North Arlington. We will return to Clifton for a pig roast/BBQ.
This event is a welcome home for the New Jersey National Guard SECFOR Platoon that has just returned from Afghanistan. Unfortunately, we lost one of our brothers over there fighting for freedom. SSgt Jorge Oliveira was killed in action on October 19, 2011. He was an Essex County Sheriff’s Officer and a member of PBA Local #183. His is one of the gravesites that we will be passing in North Arlington. Please come and join us in thanking the returning Veterans and all who serve and have served the greatest nation in the world.
